National Firearms Buyback Scheme and associated law reform

On 19 December 2025, the Prime Minister announced a National Firearms Buyback Scheme to remove newly banned and illegal firearms.

Over the past few weeks, we have also seen other statements in the media regarding firearms law reform - such as reducing firearms possession and requiring Australian citizenship to hold a firearms licence.

At this stage, details on how the scheme will operate, or changes that may affect firearms ownership in Tasmania, are not yet available.
