Tasmania Police regularly seeks the opinion of Health Professionals to give an independent assessment of the fitness of their client to possess and use firearms.

Section 29B of the Firearms Act 1996, entitles the Commissioner of Police to seek from an applicant for a firearms licence, a report from a medical practitioner about the applicant’s physical health, and a report from a medical practitioner or psychologist about the applicant’s mental health.

Information Sheet 50 – Firearms and Health Professionals, provides information and advice to assist medical practitioners and psychologists in making such assessments and giving their opinions.
