Sections 148 and 158A of the Firearms Act 1996 requires specific health professionals to report to police the following types of incidents:

  • If their patient/client is likely to possess or use a firearm in circumstances which would be unsafe, (Section 148) and:
  • Information about gunshot injuries (Section 158A).

Under Section 148 a “prescribed person” who is required to report includes:

  1. a medical practitioner
  2. a registered nurse
  3. a person registered under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (Tasmania) Act 2010 in the psychology profession
  4. a social worker, and
  5. a professional counsellor
