Expressions of interest for membership of the Firearms Consultative Committee.
The Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services calls for expressions of interest for membership of the Firearms Consultative Committee.
The Committee will provide a forum for the regular exchange of information and ideas between those involved in firearms regulation and the Minister for Police on issues relevant to firearms regulation and public safety.
The ten-member Committee of volunteers will be chaired by the Minister for Police.
The non-statutory body will identify and discuss opportunities to:
- Address improvements of and barriers to effective firearm regulation;
- Provide feedback on the National Firearms Register;
- Improve compliance with legislative requirements;
- Collaborate on initiatives and campaigns targeting, or relating to, various firearm matters;
- Share feedback about the Firearms Registry and activities within the firearm sector;
- Ensure the legislative rights of responsible firearms owners continue to align with community safety.
The Committee’s discussions will remain strictly confidential and will be used to help inform Government decision making in regards to firearms policy.
Membership of the committee will include Tasmania Police, with the balance of membership to be drawn from applicants across groups and associations with an interest in firearms regulation and compliance, such as:
- Tasmanian Peak Firearm Associations
- National advocacy or industry groups
- Museum or collecting groups
- Firearm dealer industry
- Primary producer industry groups
- Gun control, victim services, public health, legal advocates
- Recreational hunting representative groups
The selection of firearm sector members for Committee membership is based on:
- relevant expertise and experience;
- active participation in, and commitment to, firearm regulation;
- willingness to seek and represent the views of other participants;
- demonstrated commitment to improving the operation of the firearm regulatory regime;
- any other relevant skills, qualities and/or qualifications they possess.
