Tasmania Police are committed to ensuring that our communities are safe places to live, work and raise a family, while supporting lawful firearm owners who valuably contribute to our state.

Health practitioners also have a role to play, particularly when they become aware that a patient or client has access to firearms and that person may be unsafe to possess firearms due to a mental or physical condition or because the patient or client would be a threat to public safety.

Who is required to report?

Section 148(6) of the Firearms Act 1996 requires any health professional who is defined as a ‘prescribed person’ to report. A prescribed person is a medical practitioner, a registered nurse, a person registered under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (Tasmania) Act 2010 in the psychological profession, a social worker or a professional counsellor.
